Place Description
Llanrug is a community in Gwynedd. It lies 4 miles west of the town of Caernarfon, 7 miles south of Bangor on the A4086 highway between Caernarfon and Llanberis, which is 3 miles to the north west.In ancient times, Rug and Llanfair Prysgol were a free township, with the inhabitants owning their own plots of land but paying tax in kind, money and labour to the lord or prince. As a result, there was no central cluster of houses here. Up until about five hundred years ago the inhabitants of the area were known as 'here and there' from Rug or Llanfair Prysgol. The parish was only an ecclesiastical unit - the parish of St Michael at Rug. With the establishment of the Poor Law and the Highways Act, they were given the responsibility of administering them to parish residents, so Rug and Llanfair Prysgol were amalgamated to form Llan(Michael at)rug.
